New mural at Port City / ArtHouse coming October 2025!

Port City and ArtHouse RVA are proud to announce a new permanent mural installation led by award-winning painter and muralist Nico Cathcart, in collaboration with Brown Ballerinas for Change. The mural will be completed over the next two months and officially unveiled at a community celebration on October 25, 2025. Currently, artists are invited to apply to a Request for Qualifications to be included in the October exhibition.

The unveiling event will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a live performance by Brown Ballerinas for Change, local food trucks, interactive art activities, and a curated gallery exhibition on the theme of “Motion.”

Nico Cathcart, a Deaf/Hard of Hearing artist originally from Toronto and now based in Richmond, is part of the all-women’s paint crew Few and Far. She is known for her highly realistic and socially engaged murals that can be found across the United States. Her work is included in the permanent collection of the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, and she has been honored with national awards including the National Mural Award, the Susanna Kelly Art Award, and recognition as one of Culture Candy’s Top 40 Artists to Watch. Her art centers on themes of resilience, environmental stewardship, and representation, often highlighting diverse communities and voices. You can see her speaking about these subjects in her TED Talk or in the Emmy-winning documentary Mending Walls.
